Mirror polishing virtually eliminates micron- and submicron-level roughness and microscopic defects on the PDC surface, such as microcracks, scratches, and pits. When cutting abrasive rock or hard interlayers, these defects can easily become stress concentration points and preferential wear points. Polishing results in more uniform wear, preventing premature localized pitting or chipping. This can reduce wear rates by 15% to 30% in long sections of abrasive formations (Aramco, 2024. Drilling Performance Report Q3, ADPR-24-093, pp.12). It also reduces diamond grain micro-fragmentation, maintains a consistently sharp cutting edge, and extends the effective cutting life of the drill bit, thereby increasing overall drill bit life and reducing tripping and replacement costs.

 

The ultra-smooth mirror surface significantly reduces the contact area and mechanical engagement between the drill bit and rock debris, new surface, and drilling fluid, reducing the coefficient of friction by 20% to 50% (SGS laboratory, Switzerland). This reduces frictional heat generation, protecting the diamond layer and carbide substrate from thermal damage. It also reduces cuttings adhesion and "mud balling" in soft formations, maintaining cutting efficiency. It also facilitates flushing of the cutting surface with drilling fluid, avoiding repetitive cutting, offering significant advantages in mixed soft and hard formations.

 

Mirror polishing also improves the impact toughness of the drill teeth, eliminates surface stress concentration points and microcracks, and prevents chipping and breakage of the cutting edge when encountering hard interlayers or gravel, reducing the risk of premature failure and improving the overall reliability and stability of the drill bit.

At the same bit pressure, lower friction and more efficient cutting result in higher ROP, with an average ROP increase of 10%-20% in hard or abrasive formations, and even higher in certain complex formations. The ultra-smooth surface also keeps the drill bit clean in environments such as soft mudstone, improving operational stability and ensuring it performs according to design.
